Thassos Needs Us Now: A Critical Step in the Fight Against CO₂ Storage in Prinos
Thassos Needs Us Now: A Critical Step in the Fight Against CO₂ Storage in Prinos
The legal challenge concerning the proposed CO₂ storage project at Prinos has entered a decisive new stage. An official notice from the Council of State confirms that the application seeking the annulment of the project’s environmental approval will be heard by the Court’s Fifth Section on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, at 9:30 a.m.
The action is being pursued by the Island Environmental Association of Thassos, together with other applicants and with the cooperation of the Mountaineering Association of Thassos, the Kallirachi Nautical Club “Agios Nikolaos” and the Kavala Bar Association. In preparation for the hearing, further legal grounds and new scientific and technical evidence are expected to be submitted.
The organisations involved warn that the project could have serious consequences for the natural and marine environment, fishing, tourism, the local economy and future generations—not only on Thassos, but across the wider region of the Gulf of Thassos, the Thracian Sea and Mount Athos.
Previous donations have funded scientific studies, legal representation, specialist advisers, translations and other essential legal work. According to the Association, all obligations to date have been paid. However, continuing changes and developments surrounding the project have created substantial new costs ahead of the Council of State hearing, leading to a renewed appeal for financial support from the communities of Thassos and Kavala.
Go-Thassos fully supports this effort. We are contributing financially and using the Go-Thassos platform, our communication channels and our wider reach to inform residents, businesses, visitors and friends of Thassos—and to help this important message travel far beyond the island.
The protection of Thassos, its sea and its future concerns us all.
